On June 18, 2022, the inaugural Shark Tagging Scientific Day took place in the waters of Cap de Creus.
The event was organized by the Associació Catalana per una Pesca Responsable (ACPR) in collaboration with Sotamar Shark Tour, under the scientific direction of the Barcelona Zoo Foundation and the Institut de Ciències del Mar (CSIC).
Shark tagging is a vital technique to study the migratory patterns of certain pelagic species, such as the blue shark (Prionace glauca), which is critically endangered in the Mediterranean.
A highly effective approach for shark tagging is citizen science. During this event, the collaboration between recreational fishers (ACPR), scientists (Barcelona Zoo Foundation and ICM/CSIC), and biologists and divers (Sotamar Shark Tour) generated valuable knowledge for sustainable management of marine resources and ecosystems.
The Scientific Director of the event was Dr. Pablo Cermeño, a marine biologist specializing in tuna and shark tagging.
The event involved a total of 10 recreational fishing boats from the ACPR, representing five home ports in the Cap de Creus area, as well as two organizational boats with biologists and underwater photographers from ACPR and Sotamar Shark Tour.
Recreational fishing boats that participated:
- Estram - Rascassa - Cromatina - Fumarell - Rifu - Sakatia - Tilly - Calabuig - Dolça - Julia During the day, a total of seven blue sharks (Prionace glauca) were tagged.
